Your next AFCON will be like the last one’ – CAR coach predicts doom for Ghana

Central African Republic Raoul Savoy has warned Ghana to expect another disappointing campaign in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) to be held in Ivory Coast next year.

The Black Stars who experienced one of their worst competitions of all time in the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon have booked their place in the next edition after beating the Central African Republic on Thursday in the final round of qualifiers.

Despite a poor start to the game, the Black Stars rallied back to defeat the Wild Beasts 2-1 thanks to goals from Mohammed Kudus and Ernest Nuamah, destroying their opponents’ hopes of participating in the continental championship for the first time.

After the game, Savoy refused to give Ghana credit for winning instead criticising their performance and blaming the outcome on the referees.

According to him, there is nothing exceptional about Ghana’s performance and that would be exposed once more when they head to Ivory Coast just like their disastrous campaign in Cameroon.

“Your next AFCON will be like the last one,” a trusted Savoy said as he left the press room at the Baba Yara Stadium.

At the most recent AFCON in Cameroon, the Black Stars were eliminated in the group stage after earning just one point from their group and suffering a shocking loss to debutants Comoros in a game that they needed to win in order to advance on.

Ghana had previously lost to Morocco in the opening match and tied 1-1 with Gabon before their match against Comoros.

Meanwhile, Ghana are still aiming for the AFCON championship as they seek to win their fifth trophy since their last victory in 1982.
