Residents of Pataban, a farming community in the Asante Akyem North Municipality of the Ashanti Region have called on authorities to as a matter of urgency post health service personnel to its abandoned Community based health planning service (CHPS) centre.
The community with a population of over 1,500 are currently living without any nearby health facility which is deemed dangerous considering how far a patient would have to travel to receive treatment in an emergency situation.
According to some residents who spoke to Salt FM, the health facility has been ignored by health workers for some months now with the excuse of sharing the place with animals who have turned the centre into their homes.
Despite the lack of basic social amenities such as good roads, toilet facilities, good mobile network among others, residents said the abandoning of the health facility is the most painful.
“Look at the number of people living here yet we don’t have any health assistant working in this CHPS center, we travel to other communities to receive treatment. Imagine you have been bitten by a snake, you may lose your life before getting to the near by community. What is the essence of a facility without an occupants?”, they quizzed
Meanwhile the assembly member for the area ,Hon Ernest Akomeah responding to the concerns of his residents said, several attempts to reach the municipal health director has proven futile.
“We are appealing to the government and health authorities to assist us as a matter of urgency”, he added.
