Traders at Russia Park – a business centre in Agogo mounted a great resistance against what they have described as forceful ejection exercise by local authorities in the Ashanti Akyem North Municipality of the Ashanti region.
The traders who were led by the assembly member for Apetenyinase electoral area, Hon. Isaac Abrokwah said local authorities have not been fair to them indicating the contractor gave them a late notice for them to leave the site.
Speaking to Salt News’ Okwafroamoa Kwame Appiani, the angry traders insisted the leaders could have chosen a better way to go about the evacuation. According to them, they should have communicated and intensified education on the reasons for the exercise while giving them ample time to leave on their own.
Despite being offered a another place to move to, the traders said they do not want to move there because of reports of robberies and other criminal activities in that area.
They have therefore threatened to stand-up to authorities to protect their daily source of livelihood.
‘’We are sending a word of caution to the contractor to desist from carrying out any work or face our fury’’, they stated.
Responding to the comments made by the traders on Salt Anopa Bosuo to Samuel Owiredu Acheampong, Akyeamhene of Agogo Traditional Council, Nana Boakye Yiadom has empowered the traders to hold the contractor responsible if any damage is done to their goods. He said the contractor has violated the initial agreement between him and the traditional council.
