There were rumours Kantamanto would deliberately be set on fire – Traders

Following the unfortunate fire outbreak that razed some parts of the Kantamanto Market on Tuesday evening, some traders who were affected by the fire have told the media they had information prior to the 2020 election that the market would be set on fire.

A leader at the market said there were rumours prior to the election that this incident would happen.

“Two weeks to the election we heard this place would burn, so we quickly alerted the authorities, they told us to calm down and they will find out the truth but this is what has happened and we have lost lots of money.”

Fire razed the sowing section of the Kantamanto market, which is the hub of second hand clothing in Accra.

The fire is reported to have started at about 10 pm Tuesday, December 15, 2020.

Although personnel of the Ghana Fire Service arrived at the scene quiet early, the fire spread quickly.

The firefighters were able to stop the fire from spreading to other parts of the market at about 2am.

Some of the traders speaking to Joy News said they are heartbroken and are calling on the government to come to their aid.

It remains unclear what may have started the fire.

A similar incident in that same enclave occurred last month with the Accra central branch of GCB Bank when one of the bank’s offices was razed.
