Tamale: Police arrest 134 persons for assaulting female officer

Police in the Northern Regional capital, Tamale have arrested 134 persons believed to have taken part in an assault against a female police officer.
The arrests were made at Changli, a community in Tamale after the unnamed police officer was beaten till she blacked out and had to be sent to the Tamale Teaching Hospital.
According to the police, the female officer visited the community with two colleagues to arrest a suspected thief they had been investigating.
“They saw the woman and the woman called her son. Her son organised the people in the community who came, attacked the officers and assaulted them,” Northern Regional Crime Officer, Superintendent Otuo Acheampong, told Accra based Joy FM.
Following on their promise to bring the perpetrators to justice, Supt. Acheampong disclosed that the police gathered information and marked the areas they believed the alleged culprits were.
The raid which happened on Saturday, April 18, led to the arrest of the 134 persons, comprising of 123 male and 11 females.
The arrested persons have been sent to the Northern Regional Police Command where they were screened.
Supt. Acheampong explained, some of them have been released after a screening exercise but those found culpable will be charged with rioting against a public officer and resisting arrest, then processed before the court.
