The Youth and Sports Minister Hon. Isaac Kwame Asiamah has inspected the Sekondi Sports Stadium for renovation works to begin.
The Sekondi Sports Stadium has not enjoyed any major renovation works since it was built in 2008 under the regime of former President of Ghana John Agyekum Kuffour.
The stadium was built purposely to co-host the 2008 African Cup of Nations which was hosted in Ghana and since then has not seen any major facelift.
Speaking during the inspection tour, Hon Isaac Kwame Asiamah bemoaned the attitude of Ghanaians when it comes to maintenance culture, stressing that the stadium wouldn’t have reached this stage if there was maintenance module to keep the edifice in shape.
He mentioned that, already the contractor has begun the renovation exercise but indicated that the exercise has been put in two phases.
In phase one, the contractor will be removing the defected existing roofing sheets of the stadium and replaced them with new ones. Also there would be corrosive protective works which includes sun blasting to remove built-in rust and apply heavy duty coating that will guard against corrosion to metal structures of the stadium.
Hon. Asiamah also added that, the contractor will be renovating the offices at the stadium, replacing of defected sanitary appliances, repair lifts and fire fighters systems.
In phase two will be repairing and replacing broken spectator seats, electrical installations, other external works and completion of hotels and shops at the stadium.
Hon. Asiamah affirmed that, the government is pumping a whopping GH¢17,969,447.10 to the first phase of the renovations with the amount for the second phase to be announced later.
The name of the contractor is Cisdan Company Limited and they have only twelve calendar months to finish the project.
Present at the ceremony was Hon. Joe Ghartey (MP), Minister of Railways Development, Hon. Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah (MP), Western Regional Minister, Mrs. Gifty Eugenia Kusi, Deputy Western Regional Minister, Mr. Anthony K. K. Sam, Metropolitan Chief Executive, Sekondi Takoradi, Mr Frank Quist, Chief Director, MInistry of Youth and Sports, Hon. Kwadwo Baah Agyeman, Board Chairman, National Sports Authority and Professor Peter Twumasi, Director General, National Sports Authority.
