Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang’s voter ID No. was duplicated – Mahama

The voter identification number of the running mate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang was found to have been duplicated when she went to check her registration details in the ongoing voter exhibition exercise, the flagbearer of the NDC, John Mahama has said.

Addressing a press briefing on the integrity of the voter register Thursday in Accra, Mr Mahama said the duplication was among glaring cases of duplication of card numbers that the party recorded at 14 centres of the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirem (KEEA) constituency in the Central Region.

He said: “One of such cases involved my running mate Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang. She went to her centre to check her name, she sent somebody to check her name and they said she had to come herself because her number was duplicated, somebody else had the same number as her and so she had to come and collect the card and take it to the district office and to go and sort it out. And so, she had to drive from Komenda to Elmina where the district office is and at Elmina, they took the old card from her and destroyed it and replaced it with a new one”.

Mr Mahama also expressed worry that persons without the means to make such a trip would be disenfranchised because of such an error by the Electoral Commission.

EC confirms error

Checks by Graphic Online’s Enoch Darfah Frimpong at the Electoral Commission has confirmed the anomaly with Prof Opoku-Agyemang’s card.

EC sources however explained that a new card has since been printed for Prof Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang and that she picked up the new card earlier this week.

The EC source said new cards of registered voters who had a similar problem had been printed and sent to the various exhibition centres.
