Our Quality is higher, our cost is not low as we want it to be – State Housing MD
For many looking to buy government’s affordable housing, one key challenge they face is that the homes are not ‘affordable’ as the name suggests but Managing Director of State Housing Company, Kwabena Ampofo Appiah says they are looking for innovative ways to ensure their buildings remain of high quality but becomes more affordable to the ordinary Ghanaian.
According to him even though they have some of the best and cheapest prices on the market, they want to do more to ensure that every single Ghanaian can afford to buy from them and clear public perception that their homes are costly.
Speaking on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo with Chairman General, The MD said aside the high cost of building materials in Ghana which is a key contributor to how much the houses sell for, the design of the buildings also affect the pricing and the State Housing Company has introduced new designs all aimed at reducing cost in construction to make the houses more affordable.
He said Prior to 2017, the State Housing Company had not changed its designs used in constructing buildings under the affordable housing project in the 70’s and that is one thing they have changed now to make the homes less expensive.
“As at 2017 we had not changed the designs we used in the 70’s and 80’s. If you use the same design you were using in 1979 to construct in 2020, you should know it will cost you more but the new estates we are building currently are more modern and we have introduced modernised ways of building”
He said their Architects and other experts have sat to rethink through their designs and this has reduced the cost of construction which allows the end user to be the beneficiary of the savings of cost.
