2024 Polls: Govt has a lot to do; NPP must ensure reshuffle is done – Political Scientist

The government has a lot to do ahead of the 2024 general elections in terms of addressing the challenges that people are facing, a Political science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante has said.

Dr Asah-Asante noted that people are frustrated and disenchanted over economic challenges and the government’s inability to resolve those challenges.

To that end, he says the new persons who will be appointed by President Nana Addo Addao Dankwa Akufo-Addo in his imminent reshuffle will have to double their efforts to get the government right the wrongs.

He also stated that the President will require appointees who will be able to turn around the fortunes within a record time ahead of this year’s elections on December 7.

He further told President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo that although the plan to reshuffle his ministers and other appointees is a good idea, it is coming too late in the year.

The ministerial reshuffle is coming some ten months before the general elections.

Speaking on the Ghana Tonight show on TV3 Tuesday, February 13, Dr Asah-Asante said “If we are to have a reshuffle it is a fine idea but it is coming at a very late period within the year. One would have expected the government to have reshuffled a long time until now but as the saying goes better late than never.

“Now, whoever is coming in needs to be able to double their efforts of coming in order to give the government effectively some breather for the election campaign.

“They have a lot ahead of them in terms of the way they need to fix things to win the confidence of the people because people are disenchanted, people are worried, means of livelihood are affected by the day and so there is a whole lot that government needs to fix if it wants to put its act together and be able to fight the campaign and more.”

Asked whether the imminent reshuffle will make much difference, he answered “Difference? Not that much but what we are going to have certain improvements one or the other, by and large, the value is going to be the same but if you are able to do it you will be able to court some friendship of the public and you will win some souls but as to whether the effect is going to be monumental to help your course that I don’t think.

“That should be the learning curve for politicians and would-be politicians who want to have power yes it is one thing having power and another thing managing it and managing it well to hang on it for a long time. If you don’t manage power well it will slip through your fingers. I expect the party to be able to marshal forces and let the reshuffle come on so as to be able to get last-minute heads up in order to survive the elections.”

Multiple reports have indicated that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is likely to announce changes to his appointees.

“This Tuesday afternoon witnessed several movements to the fourth floor of Jubilee House by ministers expected to be affected and other MPs expected to benefit from the ministerial changes,” the reports said.
