Election 2020: Covid-19 patients will also be registered – EC

The Head of Public Affairs at the Electoral Commission, Madam Sylvia Annor has said Ghanaians who have contacted the novel Coronavirus will be registered during the New Voter’s registration exercise.

There has been a call from the leading opposition party, National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the new voter’s registration exercise to be cancelled due to the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic in the country.

Also, some section of Ghanaians have been asking whether those infected with the Coronavirus disease will be included during the registration exercise.

Speaking on Peace FM, Madam Sylvia Annor has confirmed that Coronavirus patients in Ghana will be registered during the registration exercise.

“The constitution gives everybody the right to vote and so the commission will make the necessary arrangement for the patients to register; we can’t deprive anybody of registering. They will register, but how and when will be put out later,” she assured.

She also commented on the NDC’s claims that Ghana does not need a new voter’s register.

“We have gone past this argument . . . the system has to be credible, void of doubts. We have divergent views…we have about 25 political parties but it doesn’t mean one party can dictate to the EC; we need to weigh the options and choose the right one for the country and we believe a new voters’ register is needed at this moment.

Meanwhile, Ghana has recorded 6269 cases of the pandemic with 1898 recoveries and 31 deaths.
