Labour Commission directs Health Service Workers to call off strike

The National Labour Commission (NLC) has asked the Health Services Workers’ Union to call off their strike and appear before the commission.

The NLC said they were not informed about the strike, therefore the Health Service Workers union must call it off and return to the negotiation table.

Executive Secretary of the Commission, Ofosu Asamoah said: “We have directed them to call off the strike and appear before the commission to settle the matter. They didn’t inform us of their action but we heard on the radio and we quickly contacted the ministry about it and they said they have also heard about it so negotiations are ongoing and we’ve asked them to call off the strike and appear before us.”

The workers, who are made up of record personnel, lab technicians, orderlies among others, said governments have over the years, turned a blind eye to their plight.

Day-three of the strike by the Health Service workers have rendered most hospital departments empty in the country with no queues and activities.

Most Out Patients Departments (OPD) which are normally busy and crowded with patients have been left empty and quiet with only a few nurses available to aid patients who have been caught up with the strike.

A patient shared her disappointment when she got to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital only to find empty chairs and spaces in the Hospital.

“My child had surgery so I came for a review today but unfortunately they are not around because I thought I was coming to see the Doctor as they have already given me a date but when I came and saw nobody around I was shocked because the place is always busy with doctors going around and nurses working as usual but today the place is empty and I am quite disappointed,” one woman told Joy News.
