The Director of Sports at the University of Ghana (UG), Dr. Bella Bello Bitugu has cautioned against the easing of restrictions on all sporting activities amid the coronavirus pandemic.
With the rapid rise of Ghana’s case count of the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Bitugu believes the resumption of all sporting activities will be an unwise decision.
This follows concerns mainly made by some football administration during the week in response to the disregard of the COVID-19 safety protocols by the governing ruling party of the party in their parliamentary primaries on June 21.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) in organizing its parliamentary primaries on June 21 has been condemned by many people after there were reported breaches of the COVID-19 safety protocols.
However speaking on the “Effects of Covid-16 on least financed sports in Ghana” under the partnership of GTV Sports + and Happy 98.9 FM, Dr Bitugu said:
“I think that is no basis for lifting all restrictions. It was one off.
“The fact that it happened doesn’t mean that all of a sudden, all restrictions should be eased and everything should be as it is before COVID-19”.
He further added that, there will be more repercussions of easing all protocols will be dire.
“There’s a cost to pay when this goes wrong.”
He however condemned the actions of the party in not adhering to the safety protocols to prevent the virus.
