Coronavirus: Otumfuo donates storybooks to keep JHS students busy at home
The Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Charity Foundation has donated over two thousand storybooks and dictionaries to Junior High school students at Bohyen, Aduato, Adumanu, Ampabame and South Sutrenso among other communities in greater Kumasi in the Ashanti region.
The Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Charity Foundation’s one storybook one dictionary project for junior high students in greater Kumasi Metropolis commenced on Monday 11th May, 2020.
The project seeks to keep JHS students academically busy at home while various schools across the country remain closed as part of government precautional measures to contain the spreading of coronavirus diseases.
The project is being used to educate the JHS students who come for the books on the need to observe all the COVID 19 safety protocols including the wearing of the nose mask, handwashing under running water, and physical social distancing practice.
The distribution of the books for today was held at Bohyen Duase Basic School Park with all the COVID 19 protocols fully observed with the support of the traditional and unit committee leaders.
The Executive Director of the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II Charity Foundation, Dr. Thomas Agyarko Poku while addressing the media said, “COVID 19 is causing havoc and also impeding Ghana’s educational system. Currently, we don’t know how long these children will stay at home and there will be a gab so the Otumfuo Charity Foundation is moving in with the aim of supporting education to at least bridge the gap a little. And our target is for JHS students and we are resourcing them with textbooks, storybooks and dictionary effectively while they are at home” he said.
He explained the project is not only about distributing books to the students but also educating the children on all the COVID 19 protocols that they have to adhere to ensure that they don’t contract COVID 19.
“In all the communities where the exercise has taken place we meet the children on soccer pitch (Park) to make physical social distancing easy to practice. Again we made provision of Veronica bucket and water available so we can teach the children handwashing, among other protocols’’ he explained.
Mrs. Gifty Sophia Awortwe Project Director of the Foundation also called on parents to ensure their kids read and learn while at home because of the pandemic.
“I will like to use this opportunity to plead to parents please supervised you, children, to learn while at home. Now there are no teachers to teach them at home. If you leave the Children alone they will play throughout the day and they will be rusty by the time schools resumes full academic work. We have done our part we expect the parents to do more’’ She pleaded.
