200k people to benefit from gov’t PPE and logistics to tertiary institutions – Oppong Nkrumah

The Government has begun distribution of some of Personal Protective Equipment and materials to various tertiary institutions across the country.

The distribution began on Saturday, June 13, 2020, by the Ghana Armed Forces and it is the first phase of logistical and PPEs supplies to these institutions as the government intends to also fully furnish basic, secondary and tertiary schools.

Addressing journalists in Accra Information Minister Kojo Oppong Nkrumah said a total of 234 tertiary institutions and 200,000 people will benefit from this first badge of logistics.

“The Senior Minister is ensuring the distribution goes on well, the data we have covers all institutions and in addition to that we have also made an allowance for some more, assuming there are some contigency plan so we expect to cover all tertiary institution.

“In all we are expecting about 200,000 persons to benefit from these logistics. In terms of the specific logistics, everybody is getting three face masks which are reusable so that will be about 600,000 unit of face masks” he added.

The Minister said over 1,700 veronica buckets, over 200,000 two hundred ML unit of hand senitizers and over 3,400 packets of soap and another 3,400 packet of tissue are being distributed.

The tertiary institutions to benifit have been broken down to 57 in the Greater Accra Region, 31 in Ashanti, 18 in Central, 14 in Northern, 22 in Eastern, 17 in Volta, 11 in the Western Region, 14 in the Bono Region, 11 in Upper East, 11 in Upper West, 9 in the Ahafo Region, 6 in Bono East, 5 in Western North, 3 in Oti, 4 in Savannah and 1 in the North East Region.

Ghana’s universities and schools are to reopen on 15 June to allow for final-year university, senior high and junior high school learners to resume classes which will lead to their respective exit examinations, President Akufo-Addo announced in his 10th COVID-19 address to the nation.

“Final-year university students are to report to their universities on 15 June, final-year senior high school students, together with senior high school 2 Gold Track students, on 22 June; and final-year junior high school students on 29 June,”.
